The difference in these 2 pictures is in degrees- the dining room on left has 3 pieces of trim (one crown, 2 upside down base) which works for a larger space and higher walls-however, the bathroom on the right has a much smaller area, so we went with the 2 tier installation (in this manner, the moldings won't dwarf the room).

Crown molding is always painted prior to installation for a clean, finished look. We only use self levelling semi or high gloss enamel to create a truly beautiful finish. For higher ceilings, we offer double or triple sections for architectural effect. The secret to most carpentry work including crown molding, is to create shadows by leaving margins between material.
These pictures above show a 2"molding in alcove and 3 1/4" at ceiling height- the high gloss white seems to work with any color.
We use 12 foot scaffolding for crown installation, painting, caulking and touch up when ceilings are over 14 feet.
